The area in which I have focused my research interests is family finance, particularly family budget management for child rearing. In Japan, people have begun to take note of inequality in upbringing among children and to recognize the term “child poverty.” Despite increased emphasis on the importance of parents making appropriate preparations for their children (so that they will not fall into poverty) and rhetorical agreement by parents on the need for social initiatives to address the problem, many parents have been driven into a situation where they cannot afford to consider children other than their own. Efforts should be made to lighten the excessive burdens placed on such inward-looking parents to enable them to look outside their own families for the common good. To this end, I hope to clarify how family budget management (typically a private matter falling under family responsibility) is significantly affected by social systems/norms as clearly shown by the fact that the poorer families are, the more difficulties they have in family budget management.
